"I was a loyal State Farm customer for more than 20 years. During that time, I consistently paid my premiums on time and never missed a payment. What began as auto insurance eventually expanded to include homeowners/mortgage-related coverage and life insurance for both my wife and me. At times, I was paying nearly $600 per month for our policies.

I remained with State Farm for more than two decades because I believed that being a long-term, dependable customer meant something. When my son received his driver's license, I added him to our policy as well.

During his first two years of driving, he was involved in two relatively minor accidents involving snowy conditions. Last year, he was involved in another accident while driving home from work. In total, he had three accidents over approximately three years.

I understand that insurance companies must evaluate risk, and I recognize that multiple accidents can affect an insurer's decision regarding continued coverage. What was extremely disappointing, however, was receiving a letter informing us that State Farm would no longer continue our coverage, with no meaningful opportunity to appeal or discuss the circumstances.

After more than 20 years of paying premiums, maintaining multiple policies, and remaining loyal to the same company, I expected to at least have an opportunity to speak with someone about the decision and our long history as customers.

Instead, after decades of loyalty, I was left feeling that our relationship with State Farm ultimately came down to a risk calculation and that our history as customers carried little weight.

I am sharing my experience so that other consumers can make an informed decision when choosing an insurance company. Customer loyalty can last for decades, but that does not necessarily mean the company will show the same loyalty when circumstances change.
